Always consult with your optician

There are many attributes that can affect lens thickness in your glasses, this is why it is always best to consult with your optician as to frame selection and what type of lens that will suit your needs the best. You can choose a really thin lens but frame choice can affect the final thickness of your lenses. Also, other factors such as the distance between your pupils can also have an affect on the final thickness of your glasses.

Lenses:

There are many types of materials that lenses are made out of. Some have better optics than others and some have better safety characteristics than others also. Below we will list the major types and their advantages and disadvantages.

CR-39 Regular Plastic.

This lens was what the first plastic lenses were made out of, this material is still available today and is lower priced in comparison to other products. CR-39 is made to be impact resistant but is not one of the safer lenses, it does however have good optics. It has the lowest index of refraction therefore making it a thicker lens. Here at Brent’s Eyewear we stock these type lenses and can have your glasses in this material in as little as an hour..

Glass Lenses.

Glass lenses have been around for many years and used to be what all lenses were made out of. It is slightly thinner than CR-39 plastic lenses. Glass lenses provide the best optics of any lens material and is highly scratch resistance. It is however a heavier lens and even though it is tempered to be impact resistant it still is not a very safe lens material. We do stock some of these lenses but due to the manufacturing process usually takes a few days to make.

Mid Index Lenses.

These lenses are thinner than glass and regular plastic lenses but yet is not one of the thinner materials. Mid Index lenses provide good optics and is impact resistant. We do not stock these lenses but can special order for you.

Trivex Lenses.

These lenses are considered mid index lenses like above however provide superb impact resistant qualities and very good optics. These lenses we do stock in house and can have for you in as little as an hour. This lens is the first choice for drilled frames.

Aspheric Lenses.

This type of lens is available in most all lens types. An aspheric lens utilizes softer peripheral curves away from the center of the lenses. This helps with the magnification look of the eyes in high plus powered lenses and with high minus powered lenses reduces that shrinking look of the eyes, makes the eyes appear more normal.

Polycarbonate Lenses.

This type of lens is considered a high index lens providing a thin lens and also superb impact resistant qualities. Due to the density of polycarbonate lenses they are therefore very light weight making them a comfortable lens choice. The optics of this lens is not quite as good as trivex, plastic, or glass lenses. We stock these lenses and can have for you in as little as an hour.

1.60 Index Lenses.

This is another high index lens that offers a thinner lens. We do not stock this type lens and it’s thinness properties is like that of polycarbonate and polycarbonate is a much safer lens. We can special order this lens for you.

1.67 Index Lenses.

This is a high index lens material offering really thin lenses. This material is a good choice for drill type frames and any high powered prescriptions. It is not as safe as polycarbonate or trivex materials but does offer good impact resistance. We stock these lenses and can have for you in as little as an hour.

1.70 Index Lenses.

Here is another high index lens material that provides even thinner lenses that the above 1.67. Lens availability is more limited in this lens but it is a good choice for drill type frames. This lens due to its reflective qualities has to have a non-glare coating applied to the lens. We do not stock this lens but it is available quickly.

1.74 Index Lenses.

Super thin lens available in many styles such as single vision, progressive, and even transitions. This lens has to have a non-glare coating applied due to its reflective qualities. We do not stock this lens in house but it is available.
